A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The broader security situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including vehicle use to communication habits.
