Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
